Sisterhood, Champagne, and Second Chances – A Lenox, Iowa Wedding

There’s something full-circle about photographing a wedding where you already know the family. You’ve seen them laugh, cry, roast each other, and handle chaos like pros. So when this bride reached out four years after I photographed her sister’s wedding, I couldn’t wait to come back.

The wedding took place on a classic hot Iowa summer day in Lenox, with the ceremony at the lake and the reception at the Lenox Community Center. Photos were taken downtown at the charming clock tower and the rustic old train depot—two iconic Lenox backdrops that gave us both texture and nostalgia.

One of my favorite candid moments? The bride popped champagne for the first time in her life—and immediately hated it. The photo of her face says it all.

The Bride looked gorgeous and she had two dresses. One classic. One that said party mode activated. Both were perfect.

And while not much went wrong this time, we couldn’t help but laugh about the wedding four years ago.

This year, the sisters were arguing over whose wedding was hotter. “Well,” I said, “I haven’t blacked out yet today, so…”

Cue laughter from the wedding party and her older sister goes “WAIT WHAT?!”

I looked at her and said, wait you didn’t notice?! Nope she didn’t have a clue…

Well, back then, during golden hour portraits, the heat hit me hard. I actually blacked out for a moment and took a knee. Quietly handed my camera to Nate, who finished the portraits like a pro, while I sat down with water and chips before rallying for the reception.

The sister just looked at me and said, well I never noticed and I can’t tell any difference in the photos. Listen, that’s how you know your systems work.

It’s surreal now. Three sisters married, all with kids. Time flies fast when you’re capturing families in their milestones.
