How to pick a venue for drool worthy photos?

Your venue sets the stage for your entire day—it’s where your memories will unfold and where most of your photos will happen. So yes, it’s worth thinking about how the space will photograph.
But here’s the good news: you don’t have to choose between meaning and beauty. You can have both—especially if you keep a few photo-friendly tips in mind!
(This photo was taken right next to the check in counter at a hotel!)
All Light is Not Equal (And That’s Totally Okay!)
A hilltop ceremony with an epic view? Gorgeous! Just know that bright midday sun can sometimes create strong shadows and hot spots on faces. If your ceremony is outdoors, see if there’s an option for a little shade—like trees, a pergola, or even moving the timeline to later in the day. That little shift can make your images glow and help everyone stay cool and comfy, too.
Color Matters. A LOT.
Light bounces off of everything—walls, ceilings, even clothing. That warm, rustic barn with all-wood walls? Super cozy in person, but it might give your photos a golden tone that’s tricky to tone down. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t choose it—just a heads-up so your photographer can plan ahead.
If you’re wearing white, light-colored walls (like cream or soft gray) can help your dress reflect beautifully without weird color shifts. We even wear neutral colors ourselves on wedding days so we don’t accidentally cast colors onto dresses in close-up shots. (Learned that one the hard way—thanks, hot pink shirt!)
Lighting—Even the Twinkly Kind

Barns strung with twinkle lights? Swoon. We love the vibe! Just know that if it’s super dark, the camera may struggle to focus or capture those soft details. Your photographer can bring in some gentle light to help—but it might change the mood slightly. Communication here is key so we can find the sweet spot together!
Comfort Is Key
One last tip that’s not about photos but will absolutely affect your day: think about heat and AC. Getting ready in a warm room without airflow or hosting a July reception with no air conditioning can leave guests and your crew feeling drained. We want everyone glowing from happiness—not sweat!
The Bottom Line? Pick What You Love.
If your venue means something special to you, that is always the right choice. These tips aren’t rules—they’re just little bits of photo wisdom to help you get the most out of wherever you say “I do.” And no matter what you choose, we’ll be there to make it look high end. Just like in this MoDot Barn!
